Has always meant different things. At the time Mike Ireland and Rich Smith wrote this, it was in regards to several people getting arrested for torching the stars and bars to protest the 1991 invasion of Iraq. It has been a constitutional issue, as to whether this is an accepted form of free going back a long time before the ’60s protests against the war in Viet Nam. The imagery in this audio track was added by someone else, much later. Regardless of your political views, you’ve gotta love the clean guitars, and tight rhythm, that harken back to the late 50s country/rockabilly sound.
A couple of SoCal Mexicans, the Lemon brothers, who couldn’t speak a word of Spanish, on lead and drums. Ran sound for a few times for “The Starkweathers,” named after Charlie and Lynn, the first modern spree killers. Later signed to SubPop as “Holler” when the were trying to broaden their stable outside of Nirvana and grunge. Moved from KC, MO to Seattle. Didn’t last.Hope this doesn’t offend anybody, we were all just shitdisturbers, having fun and trying to get people to think in a third way.

Thanks for posting. The ’60’s and 70’s were indeed a wakening in America. Outright protests, sometimes violent, against ingrained beliefs were something the public were now getting exposed to. The evening news was the main source of direction for most, and some of the newscasters were indeed worthy of respect and had integrity. People followed the message they espoused and shared those beliefs. When mostly young “radicals” started questioning that it was not accepted well. It was “uncomfortable” to realise that people had to start thinking for themselves and consider alternate ideas of what our hard-fought freedom had wrought. The JFK assassination shook the country to its core, the Weathermen, SDS, and The Move (et al) shocked the complacency of everyday life. The Vietnam war and the DNC Convention in Chicago inflamed most of the population. A new form of expression of the undercurrent of beliefs about who we were as a nation started taking roots. And of course the music of that time was an avenue to express the turmoil. Now we have the internet and views can be spread quickly. But in that era, music was a main source of, particularly young people, to coalesce around. Stretching their wings of being relevant in the discourse, we heard a new platform. That’s why I think the music of that time is so important. An early disseminator of different views and attitudes and the means to express them. As Grace Slick said at Woodstock before playing “Volunteers”, “It’s a new dawn”.

You should be able to edit your posts. It’s pretty faint and I’m not actually sure how to fix that – ’cause I’m not actually good at this. I’m just doing it ’cause nobody else will.
By the way, no offense taken. Music is music.
We’re not “free speech” ’cause we have a hosting company – but we’re pretty damned lenient and difficult to offend. The only time something will be disapproved of is when it’ll get us booted from the hosting company.
We don’t have to walk on eggshells, but we do have to avoid the fairly obvious word choices and engaging in things that modern society has deemed hateful. I’m actually mostly okay with that, as it’d be a potential distraction.
I really doubt it’s going to be much of a problem.

Tried Mozilla Firefox instead of IE, and still not seeing “edit” function, but could be me. Whereabouts on page?
I would like to do a submission, and think bouncing it back and forth a couple of times with you guys is great idea. Get it cleaned up and make clarifications.
If you guys an come up with a topic or three for me to chose from, that might be helpful. 70s rock is probably my weakness, other a few obscurities like MC5 and Alex Chilton’s Big Star.
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, have house guests coming into town. Should have a bit more time early this next week. Invited an dear old friend to check this site out. Was lead singer/co-songwriter for roots rock band I worked for. Now older, though doesn’t show it, still dabbles in folk but mostly swing.
Was okay on bass and rythym guit, but keeps learning new instruments. Here, sax and harp on oldie.

Thanks for that clip. I like a good swing tune and that was done well. Look forward to some more of any type. As for the edit function, @TheBuddha is the site tech guru here. He too has a few houseguests over this weekend, around 500-800 camped on his land. He throws an annual 4th party for his village and is in the middle of that. I’m sure he’ll see this and get back with you soon. We’d love to have your input and share with the others your interests. Again, Thank you for your time.

Get it cleaned up and make clarifications.Just above your post, not far from where I clicked the quote button, there’s a small header type of thing that says the date and time of your submission. On that line, there should be “edit.”
At least it’s supposed to be there! If it isn’t, let me know. I can grab a screenshot later and put an arrow onto it, if you need me to. It’s REALLY faint and I’m not actually sure how to change that!
Also, you should now have a top-bar (you may have had it already) and there’s a thing that looks like a speedometer and says “Music For Us” next to it. You can also see the same thing, the thing that might interest you, by clicking on the “new” (next to the + sign) and you can write an article.
Then, you can edit it until you’re content, ask for help to edit it, whatever.
When you’re done – either @COF or I (probably COF) can toss it into the queue as a scheduled article. Basically, I’ve set your permissions to ‘contributer’ which means you can write ’em, but you can’t publish them. Until/unless the site grows, we’re going to keep it that way to ensure that we’re able to push out only content that the hosting company won’t ban us for.
Man, I’d hate to move this site!

Do I have your permission to post this as an article?
If the answer is yes, then it’ll get popped into the queue and scheduled for sometime just after the 1st of August.
It’s my opinion that it’s suitable for an article and won’t need much editing to turn it into one. It’ll just get copied/pasted and then formatted with the video linked and cached properly. Then, some keywords will be added to make the page pretty for search engines and that’s pretty much about it.
So, if we have your permission, it’ll go up on the front page.
One of these days, I’ll get around to writing a formal agreement that allows us to do this without asking permission (all contributors will retain copyright but posting grants us unlimited use to post on this site, or related sites for which we have control, and things like that). I just haven’t gotten there and I don’t really feel like paying my lawyer any additional money at this time.
